Source: The above table was provided by County staff at the Arlington County Civic Federation meeting of April 1, 1997. This table depicts the location and current number of the County's "committed affordable units" (CAF unit). A CAF unit is defined by the County as one that is pledged by agreement with the County, State, or Federal government to remain affordable to low and moderate income households for a specified period of time through mechanisms such as nonprofit ownership, site plan requirements, contracts with private owners, or IRS regulations governing tax-exempt financing. In FY 1992, the County Board established the housing policy goal of adding 360 CAF units per year (or a "unit a day"). In FY 1992, the County's stock of CAF units totaled 2,481 units. Since that time Arlington has added 803 CAF units. This includes the Historic Ballston Park project, formerly known as the Buckingham Redevelopment project, which involves a partnership between Paradigm Development Corporation, a for-profit corporation, and the Arlington Housing Corporation, a non-profit corporation.
